How to Cancel YouTube Premium and Check Your Billing

You want to stop paying for YouTube Premium. Maybe the free trial is ending, maybe the monthly charge is not worth it right now, or you see a renewal charge on your bKash wallet or bank card and need to investigate why.

The single most important principle to understand is this: cancelling in the wrong place does nothing. YouTube Premium can be billed directly by YouTube, through Google Play billing, or via Apple. You must cancel through the exact billing provider where you subscribed.

This guide walks you through finding your billing source, executing the cancellation cleanly, checking your receipts, and understanding how Google's refund policy works in Bangladesh.

First, Find Out Who Bills You

Before tapping "Cancel" anywhere, verify which entity handles your subscription:

  1. Open payments.google.com and sign in with the Google account linked to your YouTube profile.
  2. Inspect your recent transactions. If the entry specifies "Google Play" or displays a Google Play order token, your subscription is managed via Google Play. If it indicates "YouTube" or "Google LLC," it is billed directly by YouTube.
  3. Alternatively, open the YouTube mobile app, tap your profile picture, and navigate to Purchases and memberships. Under your active plan, it will explicitly state if it is "Billed by Google Play" or handled directly.
  4. If you originally subscribed through the YouTube app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple is your billing agent. You must manage and cancel that subscription exclusively within iOS settings.

How to Cancel YouTube Premium

1. If You Pay Through Google Play (The bKash Route)

In Bangladesh, most users subscribe to YouTube Premium using bKash via Google Play billing (detailed in our guide on How to Buy YouTube Premium in Bangladesh with bKash). YouTube does not process bKash directly on its website.

To cancel a Google Play subscription:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Payments & subscriptions, then tap Subscriptions.
  4. Locate and select YouTube Premium from your active subscriptions.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Select a cancellation reason and confirm.

Once confirmed, Google Play turns off auto-renewal. Your bKash account will no longer be debited on subsequent billing dates.

Note: Google Play billing does not support temporary subscription pausing. If you wish to halt charges temporarily, you must cancel and manually resubscribe whenever you choose.

2. If You Pay YouTube Directly

If your membership is billed directly by YouTube (via international credit or debit card), manage it via YouTube's web portal:

  1. Visit youtube.com/paid_memberships on a browser.
  2. Click Manage membership next to your active plan.
  3. Click Deactivate.
  4. Select Continue to cancel.
  5. Choose your cancellation feedback reason and confirm.

If you are billed directly by YouTube, you may also see an option to Pause membership. This allows you to pause charges for 1 to 6 months without terminating your account benefits permanently.

3. If You Pay Through Apple (iOS)

Subscriptions created inside the YouTube app on Apple devices must be terminated through iOS:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your Apple ID / Name banner at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select YouTube Premium and tap Cancel Subscription.

What Happens After You Cancel

Cancelling stops all future recurring charges. However, you will not lose your Premium perks immediately:

  • Continuous Access: Your ad-free playback, background listening, offline downloads, and YouTube Music access remain fully active until the final day of your current paid billing period.
  • No Automatic Pro-Rated Refunds: Under standard cancellation terms, Google does not provide partial or pro-rated refunds for remaining unused days in a cycle. You simply retain full access until expiration.

How to Check Your Billing and Invoices

To audit past payments and download official VAT invoices, visit Google Payments Center (payments.google.com). Sign in to view comprehensive transaction histories, card details, and billing tokens.

To avoid unwanted renewal charges, check your Next Billing Date under youtube.com/paid_memberships. Always submit your cancellation at least 24 hours prior to your renewal date to ensure the automated payment gateway does not trigger a recurring charge.

When and How a Refund Is Possible

While standard cancellations do not issue refunds, Google does evaluate refund requests under specific, legitimate conditions:

  • Unauthorized or Erroneous Deductions: If a free trial auto-converted unexpectedly or you experienced unauthorized charges.
  • Defective Service or Technical Glitches: If Premium features (such as background play or offline downloads) failed to operate despite an active membership.
  • Prompt Google Play Requests: If you submit a refund inquiry through Google Play within 48 hours of an accidental renewal, automated approval is significantly higher.

To request a refund for a Google Play charge:

  1. Go to Google Play Order History on your browser.
  2. Find the YouTube Premium charge and click Report a problem.
  3. Select "I purchased this by accident" or state your issue, and submit.

If granted, your Premium benefits terminate immediately, and funds are reimbursed to your original payment method (such as your bKash wallet).

Troubleshooting: If You Cannot Cancel

If the cancellation button fails or the subscription is missing:

  • Verify the Active Account: Multiple Google accounts logged into one device often cause confusion. Ensure you are signed into the exact Gmail profile holding the subscription.
  • Clear Browser Cache or Use Incognito: Session cookies occasionally freeze Google checkout portals; try an incognito window or alternate browser.
  • Third-Party Reseller Groups: If you joined a cheap shared Family plan through an independent seller (see our analysis on YouTube Premium Family Plan Rules), you do not control the master subscription. You cannot cancel it via Google Play. Instead, simply remove yourself from the family group under families.google.com and discontinue paying the seller.
