YouTube Premium Yearly Price: What 12 Months Costs You

The YouTube Premium price yearly for an individual plan is $159.99 in the United States. Paying $15.99 every month for 12 months costs $191.88, so the annual plan saves you about $32, or 17%. The yearly plan is pre-paid and does not renew by itself. Prices in Bangladesh are set in taka and differ from these dollar figures, so use them as a benchmark and read your own price on YouTube's sign-up page before you pay.

In simple terms, a yearly YouTube Premium plan means you pay once for 12 months of ad-free videos, background play, offline downloads and YouTube Music. You skip the monthly charge, and you avoid the small shock of a monthly price hike. The trade-off is that your money is tied up for a year.

This guide covers what the annual plan costs and why the number matters after the recent price hikes. It explains how the plan works, how it compares with the family, student and Lite plans, and how to sign up. It also shows when a year is worth paying for. We sell YouTube Premium and other subscriptions at AroraShop to buyers in Bangladesh who pay with bKash, Nagad or Rocket, so we cover the payment side too.

Why the yearly price matters after the price hikes

The yearly price matters because a price hike hits monthly billing twelve times, while the annual plan takes the hit once per term. At $159.99, the annual plan is the cheapest way to get full Premium as an individual. The sections below show the numbers, what the hikes did to them, and why dollar prices are only a benchmark in Bangladesh.

What a year costs on monthly and annual billing

Here is the direct comparison for the US individual plan. The annual plan works out to $13.33 a month, against $15.99 on monthly billing.

Billing Price Cost over 12 months Effective monthly Monthly $15.99 $191.88 $15.99 Annual $159.99 $159.99 $13.33 Difference $31.89 saved $2.66 less

You save $31.89 over a year, which is about 17%. Many sources round this to "about 15%", but the arithmetic gives 16.6%.

What the price hikes did to a 12-month bill

Older US figures were $11.99 per month and $119.99 per year. Current figures are $15.99 and $159.99. That is a rise of $4 a month, or 33%. The annual plan rose by the same share, $40 a year. In 12-month terms:

  • Monthly billing went from $143.88 to $191.88, which is $48 more per year.
  • Annual billing went from $119.99 to $159.99, which is $40 more per year.

The percentage hike is the same, but the annual plan stays cheaper in both periods. Existing members normally get a notice before a new price applies to them. When you hold a pre-paid year, the new price shows up when you buy again, not in the middle of your term.

Why dollar prices are only a benchmark in Bangladesh

YouTube sets Premium prices per country. The $15.99 and $159.99 figures are US list prices. When YouTube Premium launched in Bangladesh in August 2023, the individual plan was BDT 239 per month, according to The Daily Star. Paid monthly at that launch price, 12 months came to 2,868 BDT.

Your current price may be different, and not every country is offered the annual option. Open YouTube's Premium page while signed in to your account to see your own price and plan list. The annual figure only helps you if it appears there.

Every hike is multiplied by twelve on monthly billing, but you feel it only once per term on a pre-paid year.

How the YouTube Premium annual plan works

The annual plan is a pre-paid, non-recurring membership for individual users. You pay once and get up to 12 months of access. Nothing renews automatically, which makes it a different product from the monthly plan.

Pre-paid means no automatic renewal

With monthly billing, YouTube charges your payment method every month until you cancel. With the annual plan, you pay the full year upfront and the charge does not repeat. When the year ends, your Premium access ends too. YouTube does not quietly bill you again.

That has a practical side. If the price rose during your year, you meet the new price when you buy again. Put a reminder in your calendar two or three weeks before the end date, so you can renew without a gap in ad-free viewing and compare the new price with the monthly rate first.

Limits to know before you pay

The annual plan comes with rules that decide whether it suits you:

  • Individual only. Google's help page says annual plans are available only to individual users. Family and student plans are billed monthly.
  • Stacking is allowed. You can hold up to 24 months of access by buying another year before the first one ends.
  • No partial refund. If you stop using Premium early, you do not get money back for the unused months.
  • Regional availability. The option may not appear in every country, so check your sign-up page.

The refund point is the one people forget. A monthly plan lets you stop after any month. An annual plan commits the full amount, so do not buy a year unless you will use it.

An annual plan is a prepayment, so the price only counts as a saving if you use all 12 months.

Yearly price vs family, student and Lite plans

The annual individual plan is the best deal for one person who wants every Premium feature. A shared family plan can cost less per head, and the student and Lite plans cost less in total. Which one is cheapest depends on how many people use it and which features you need.

The plans side by side

All figures below are US list prices, converted to a 12-month cost so you can compare the plan prices directly.

Plan Price Cost over 12 months Notes Individual annual $159.99/year $159.99 Full Premium, one person Individual monthly $15.99/month $191.88 Full Premium, one person Family $26.99/month $323.88 Up to 5 members aged 13+, same household Student $8.99/month $107.88 Eligible students only Premium Lite $8.99/month $107.88 Fewer features

NerdWallet reports that the student plan includes a first free month. That brings the first-year cost to $98.89, since you pay for 11 months. Student eligibility must be verified each year, and the plan is capped at four years.

The family plan math

The family plan costs $323.88 a year, which is more than double the annual individual plan. But split across four people it is $80.97 per person per year, or about $6.75 a month. Everyone gets full Premium on their own Google account.

The catch is the rule that members must live in the same household. If you live alone, the annual individual plan is the better choice. If two or more people in your home watch YouTube daily, the family plan beats everyone buying a separate annual plan.

Premium Lite and YouTube Music alone

Premium Lite costs $8.99 a month and is mostly ad-free for YouTube and YouTube Kids. NerdWallet notes it leaves out downloads, background play and the ad-free music app. If you watch only at home on Wi-Fi, Lite is cheaper over a year ($107.88) than the annual plan.

If you want only music, YouTube Music Premium costs $11.99 a month, or $119.99 a year. Full Premium already includes that music service. At $159.99 a year you pay about $40 more than the music-only annual plan, and you also get ad-free video.

Pick the plan by who uses it and which features you need, then compare the 12-month totals.

How to sign up for the annual plan

You sign up on YouTube's own Premium page, choose the individual plan, and pick the annual option if your region offers it. The whole process takes a few minutes on a desktop browser. The steps below follow Google's help page, and your screens may use slightly different labels.

A five-step process for buying the yearly YouTube Premium plan on the web.

Steps to buy the yearly plan

  1. Sign in to the Google account you want to use for Premium.
  2. Open youtube.com/premium in a web browser.
  3. Choose the Individual plan and look for the annual or pre-paid option. If it is not listed, your country does not offer it.
  4. Add a payment method and check the total in your own currency, including any tax.
  5. Confirm the purchase, then check your membership status under your paid memberships page.
  6. Set a reminder for a few weeks before the year ends.

Because the plan is non-recurring, step 6 is yours to handle. YouTube will not renew it for you.

Buy on the web, not in the iPhone app

Subscribers report that Premium costs more when you buy through the iOS app than through YouTube's website. The difference comes from the app store's billing layer. Open the website in a browser and subscribe there, then use the app only to watch. Compare the price on both screens if you are unsure.

Paying without an international card

Many people in Bangladesh do not have a card that works for international payments. Google's accepted payment methods depend on your country, so check which ones your account shows at checkout. A gift-card balance only works if the card matches your account's country.

If a card is the obstacle, you can buy a YouTube Premium subscription through a marketplace such as AroraShop, which lists YouTube Premium and accepts bKash, Nagad and Rocket with instant digital delivery. Before you pay anyone, read the product page for the plan length and the price in taka. Ask whether the plan is activated on your own Google account. Google's family plan is meant for one household, so be careful with any seller that adds you to a family group, and make sure you understand what happens when the term ends.

Pay on the web, check the price in your own currency before you confirm, and set a renewal reminder.

When the yearly plan is worth buying

The yearly plan is worth it if you would keep Premium for 11 months or more. Below that, monthly billing or a cheaper plan costs less. The break-even point is the number that settles it.

The 11-month break-even

Divide the annual price by the monthly price: $159.99 ÷ $15.99 is just over 10. At 10 months of monthly billing you would pay $159.90, nine cents less than the annual plan. At 11 months you would pay $175.89, which is $15.90 more than the annual plan. So the annual plan wins once you would use 11 months or more. The same logic works with your own prices. Multiply your monthly price by 10 and compare it with the annual price on your sign-up page.

Think about how you use it too. If you watch daily, download videos for commutes, or play videos while your screen is off, you will not drop the plan after a few months. A heavy user gets the most from the year.

A quick decision guide

  • You are one person who watches daily: buy the annual individual plan.
  • Two or more people in one home use YouTube: the family plan is cheaper per head.
  • You are an eligible student: use the student plan.
  • You only want fewer ads and watch on Wi-Fi: consider Premium Lite.
  • You only want music: look at YouTube Music Premium.
  • You are unsure you will keep it: start monthly and switch to annual later.

Buy the year only if you would keep Premium for 11 months or more, and otherwise stay monthly, or buy YouTube Premium in Bangladesh in taka through AroraShop.
